Splendid monastic complex built in the IX century. Those visiting this sacred place will immediately be astonished about its great flight of steps, especially for its height and steepness.
This probably unique feature is due to the fact that it was necessary to keep the crypt high in order to protect the Abbey from the frequent flooding of the Potenza river, running not far off.
The altar is supported by an arch under which worshippers pass for nine times in a row to be relieved from bone pain. In a text written before 1050, Saint Pier Damiani appointed also Firmanus Firmensis among the Saints who lived in his times, above whose remains, due to the miracles he was given credit for, was erected an altar on which the "Divine Mysteries" were celebrated.
